Sonozaire doesn't spray a scent over a smell. It makes ozone from the oxygen already in the air, and that ozone chemically destroys the molecule causing the odor. Here's exactly how it works β and why it's safe.
What ozone actually is
The air you breathe is about 21% oxygen β molecules of two oxygen atoms bonded together (O₂). Ozone (O₃) is simply oxygen with a third atom attached, and that third bond is unstable. It wants to let go β and when it does, it reacts with the very first molecule it can oxidize.
Making it is simple and needs no chemicals: a high-voltage electrical field (a "corona discharge") splits ordinary oxygen and reforms it as ozone β 3 O₂ → 2 O₃. Air goes in, ozone comes out. Nothing to refill, nothing to store.
Just oxygen and electricity. No cartridges, no consumables, no fragrance.
It destroys odor β it doesn't cover it
When that unstable third atom meets an odor, smoke, or bacteria molecule, it oxidizes it β breaks it apart into simple, stable compounds: carbon dioxide, water, and oxygen. The smell doesn't get buried under a stronger scent. The molecule that caused it is gone.
Tough odors β garbage, fire and smoke, sewage β are built from many molecules, so they take more ozone or longer exposure to fully break down. That's why treatment time and output are dialed to the job, and why fans are often used to keep the ozone circulating and reacting.
Yes β because ozone cleans up after itself
Ozone is a powerful oxidizer, so β like any effective industrial tool β it's used with common sense: you treat an unoccupied space, then ventilate before anyone goes back in. Used that way, it's one of the safest and most complete deodorizers there is, for three built-in reasons.
It disappears on its own
Ozone is unstable β with nothing left to react with, it reverts to plain oxygen. Its half-life is only 10β20 minutes, so levels fall to roughly 3% within about 90 minutes of shut-off. It does the job, then it's gone.
You can smell it β a built-in alarm
Your nose detects ozone at 0.01β0.04 ppm β like a single penny in a million dollars. That fresh, sharp "after-the-thunderstorm" smell is your cue the space isn't ready for re-entry yet.
Clear limits, by design
OSHA's workplace limit is 0.1 ppm over 8 hours; the EPA sets ambient-air standards too. Sonozaire units are built for unoccupied-space shock treatment and are not for occupied, hospital, or sick rooms.
The simple, safe protocol

Clear the space. Remove people, pets, and plants. Cover or relocate fish tanks; keep latex and leather exposure short.

Treat empty. Run the unit in the sealed, unoccupied area. Keep it dry β avoid wet or high-humidity spaces.

Wait. After the timer stops, give it about 90 minutes to 2 hours for ozone to revert to oxygen.

Ventilate & re-enter. Air the space out, and it's ready β clean, with the odor destroyed rather than hidden.
